The first scroll in my queue is a County award from over 20 years ago. I'm the society I belong to, after a person has served as king or queen, when they step down they are given the title of Count or Countess. (If they've served as ruler twice, they become a Duke or Duchess. The running joke is that if they serve as ruler three or more times, they're called a slow learner.)
So anyway, this particular scroll dates to sometime in the 90s, and is not a surprise for the recipient. In fact, she supplied the translation of the text into Irish Gaelic, so I'm pretty sure she knows it's coming.
At first glance, this first attempt at the text fits its allotted space perfectly! But after I finished, I realized that I had intended to leave room for a simple border around the edge. That's not a disaster at this stage; the whole point of a mockup is to test things like my chosen margins, nib size, and so on. It's also a chance to get used to the words, and since I'll be writing in a language I don't understand, that's especially important. At this point, I fully expect to do at least two more mockups before I'm ready to write the real thing on the vellum I've ordered.
